The contrast between the mills of 1840s Lowell and the manufacturing hubs of the mother country, England, was stark.

Famed Victorian author Charles Dickens wrote in American Notes that the comparison "would be between the Good and Evil, the living light and deepest shadow," a comparison between "this great town (Lowell) and those great haunts of desperate misery," after his Feb. 3, 1842, visit to the New World's Mill City.
