Let there be light!

This week Dimitris was able to get the electricity running and some fixtures installed. Having light in the house made our restoration feel more real for all of us. The amazing part of the house is the incredible natural light that flows into most all of the rooms. If it’s a sunny day – you won’t even have to turn on any lights within the house. Melanie even got involved with working on some of the light fixtures for installation.

We continue to work on the finish. The beautiful walnut doors went back up this week and we restored the grand pavilion woodwork.

Some interesting solutions this week: 1) The space between the Master sitting room and Master bedroom seemed just “normal”. We found a salvaged Circa 1900 Colonnade (room divider) that came out of a home in Western NY. It was the perfect scale and look for the room – so we modified the piece to fit the existing master bedroom space. Wow! Just a few pieces of wood and columns add such great drama to the room. Why don’t more people do this?
2) We also spiced up the staircase half wall with salvaged spindles, cherry cap and trim. 3) We originally planned to have a small pedestal sink in the first floor bathroom. However, we found out that a pipe could not placed in the wall due to a structurally beam that was in the way. The pedestal sink would not work – so we found a great period looking (new) vanity that covered the pipes on the floor. Lesson: stay flexible and go with the flow (especially when it involves plumbing – author’s note: pun intended). 4) Fernando made a seat bench on the third floor (covering a radiator) so the new owners can spend some quality time looking out at the great view on the left side of the home. 5) We had to heat the grand tower room, but we did not want to use normal looking baseboard radiators. We were able to find salvaged cast iron baseboard radiators to wrap around the 3 walls of the room. Now the grand tower room is complete for most any use all year round.

We also went all out on the AC venting grates. We purchased beautiful cast iron and aluminum reproduction grates. John also worked the molding around the vents in an artistic way.

Our kitchen appliances (AGA stove and AGA refrigerator and Kitchen Aid dishwasher) went into place this week – we’ll be making the connections next week to make them live. We also continued to paint the kitchen cabinetry – with one more coat to go. The plumber will be getting our bathroom and kitchen fixtures in next week.

I’ve also included some pictures of an amazing country store display cabinet (over 13 feet long!) that we were originally going to put in the kitchen. It’s in incredible shape and would make a dramatic addition to any kitchen or pantry. Sadly, after making some changes to the layout of our kitchen – we could not use the cabinet. If you’d like to purchase -- let me know and we can work out a deal.

It was a blockbuster week for us in the PR realm. We got the feature story in the Sunday Real Estate section of the Boston Globe. Visit http://www.boston.com/realestate/news/articles/2008/03/30/hewing_classic_home_into_modern_era/ to view the article online. We will also have a PDF of the article up on our website within the next couple of weeks.

Our plan is now to be 90 – 95% complete for our Home Tour and close to 100% for our Open House. We’re expecting quite a few people to come to our Home Tour and Open House – if you’re planning to visit us – please come early and stop by to say Hi to Melanie and I at the MODVIC Time Machine. The home’s transformation from the past to the future is almost complete. Hope to see you soon.

Re: Week 39 of the Restoration (03/24/2008 – 03/28/2008)

We spent some time peeking through the windows when all the lights were on. It looks beautiful!

Hi Wheatleys --

The house seemed to come alive when the lights finally went on this week!

Hopefully we'll see you at the Home Tour this weekend. Please introduce yourselves to Melanie and I at our ModVic Time Machine. Thanks, Bruce

I read about the Houdini thing at the jail in North Attleboro. I was born and raised there in North Attleboro and I remember my grandfather telling me about a magician that had a floating lady in one of the store fronts in downtown for a week. I not sure if that was Houdini, for some reason I think it was Blackwell. Not sure if he was around the same time or not. Just thought I would give you that info in case it helps you out. By the way, what a beautiful job you have done with the Freeman house. If I win the lottery, I would buy it in a second. Keep up the good work there and will come to open house in April.

Hi Bruce and Melanie,
My Great Grandparents were Annie and Herman Theile who lived at 390 Mt. Hope Street (Mt. Hope Manor) in the early 1900’s.  I would love to talk with you and your wife about the house and the history I know from my Great Aunt Mrs. Bell and my mother who was born there.  As a young girl I used to polish the mahogany banister on the circular staircase to the third floor.  I have a lot of fond memories regarding that house, and I would love to reminisce and share what I know about its history.  Sincerely, Donna Jurdak, N Attleboro MA

Hi Bruce :My cousin Dorothy Forbes just called me to tell me about the Victorian Home in North Attleboro . My great great grandparents owned and lived there many many years ago. Dorothy was thrilled to of had the opportunity to go thru the home. My name is Albert Berard ,my age is 83 and I don't remember too much about the house other than what was told to me by my parents and grandparents on the Berard side.I once had a photo of some relative by the name of LaPlant that was recently discarded because I have no other living sister or brother that could explain to me who the person was . In past years I've seen the house many times and remember the servant quarters and also a carriage house that I believe is no longer there. the years have taken a toll on my memory.I still have an old brownish grey photo of the home .It's been many years since the relatives lived there. I seem to remember something about a Priest by the name of LaPlant living there after his retirement. I'll have to talk to Dorothy about that when I see her in a couple weeks. Albert J. Berard.

I drove by the house on Mt. Hope Street earlier this evening. I read about your project in the Sun Chronicle, Sunday. I am an artist and one of the pieces I did a few years back was a pen and ink drawing of North Attleboro center around 1900. I was going to drop off one of the prints, if you'd like it. I can appreciate your undertaking. A friend of mine and I gutted his Queen Anne Vic close to eight years ago and remodeled it. Neither of us had ever done something that involved before. We have since parted ways. I work for a landscape company now and do some remodeling/ fix up jobs in the winter, if the opportunity comes along. I'd like to see the work you are doing, just curious and if you need a hand (weekends, rain days, evenings) let me know. Learning and gaining experience are always of interest to me. If you'd like the print, free, let me know. Best wishes to your success.
Sincerely, Peter Clarke.
